Car park operation: a multi-faceted job below ground
Marie-France Angély knows Clermont Ferrand’s car parks well: she’s worked in them for 20 years, including four below ground.
She started out as a personal assistant in a small car park operation company in Clermont Ferrand. A few year later, she was manager of six underground car parks. And being underground doesn’t worry her at all: “Not being able to see the sky is the same as seeing it every day from your office on the 30th floor.”
She has many responsibilities: “My job is to manage a team of operations assistants and to keep the car parks running smoothly, both from a technical and administrative angle.”
She’s also developing her capacity for customer service. “In my position, I have to meet people, whether they’re season ticket holders (there are 750 of them) to review the situation, or customers paying by the hour when there’s a slight – usually technical – hitch: a card that’s demagnetised, someone who doesn’t have the right change or drivers who can’t remember where their car’s parked!”
Working underground doesn’t mean you’re isolated and cut off from the world. “I have a great team working with me.”
And then, if she does occasionally feel a bit stressed, while others may have 30 floors to go down for a breath of fresh air, she only has one floor to go up.
